Canada Document Attestation UAE — GAC Apostille & MOFA Guide (2026)

How do I attest Canadian documents for UAE use?

Since January 11, 2024, Canada is a Hague Apostille Convention member. Canadian documents are now apostilled by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) instead of going through embassy attestation. However, for UAE use, you still need MOFA attestation after the apostille. The process is: provincial authentication, GAC apostille, then MOFA attestation in the UAE.

Canada's Hague Convention Membership — What Changed in 2024

Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention on January 11, 2024, fundamentally changing how Canadian documents are legalized for international use. Before this date, Canadian documents required authentication by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) followed by embassy attestation at the destination country's embassy in Canada. Since January 2024, GAC now issues apostilles — a single certification that is recognized by all Hague Convention member countries. For UAE-bound documents, this simplifies the process because the embassy attestation step is no longer required. However, MOFA attestation in the UAE is still mandatory as the final step. This is an important distinction — the apostille replaces the embassy step but does not replace MOFA.

The Updated Attestation Process (Post-2024)

The current process for attesting Canadian documents for UAE use involves these steps.

  1. 1Provincial authentication — Documents must first be authenticated by the relevant provincial authority. For example, Ontario documents go through ServiceOntario, Quebec documents through the Ministère de la Justice, and British Columbia through the BC Ministry of Attorney General.
  2. 2GAC Apostille — Submit the provincially authenticated document to Global Affairs Canada for apostille certification. GAC issues a standard Hague Apostille certificate. Processing: 10-20 business days by mail, or faster at the GAC office in Ottawa.
  3. 3MOFA attestation in UAE — The apostilled document is submitted to MOFA in the UAE for final attestation. Standard: AED 40, 2-3 business days. Express: AED 150, 1 business day.

Common Canadian Documents for UAE Attestation

Canadian nationals and former residents commonly need these documents attested for UAE purposes.

  • -University degrees and transcripts — for employment and Golden Visa
  • -Birth certificates — for family visa and school admission
  • -Marriage and divorce certificates — for visa sponsorship changes
  • -Police clearance (RCMP) — for employment in regulated sectors
  • -Corporate documents — for business setup in UAE free zones
  • -Powers of attorney — for property and legal transactions
  • -Professional certifications — for licensing with DHA, KHDA, etc.

Processing Timeline

The total process for Canadian documents now takes approximately 3 to 5 weeks. Provincial authentication varies by province — Ontario and BC are typically 5 to 10 business days while Quebec may take longer. GAC apostille processing is 10 to 20 business days by mail, though walk-in service at the Ottawa office can be same-day. MOFA attestation in the UAE takes 2 to 3 business days standard. This is faster than the pre-2024 process which required embassy attestation as an additional step.
